Balance and Moderation - The 80/20 Guideline

Writer's picture: Madeleine MitchellMadeleine Mitchell

There are no rules when it comes to nutrition. Everyone has different nutritional needs and responds to food differently. People often fall back on fad diets such as Keto, Paleo, South Beach, Fasting, and Whole 30 in a hurry to lose weight. These diets have proven to be extremely unsustainable and unhealthy. While they may result in quick weight loss, the results are nearly impossible to maintain. I have dedicated my time and research to find a balance for long term results that are more sustainable. My goal is to spread awareness about the harm of these fad diets and to promote the importance of balance and moderation. My favorite tool in helping understand how easy balance can be is the 80/20 equation. This means that around 80% of the food you consume should be whole foods such as vegetables, fruits, lean protein, and whole grains. The remaining 20% can be processed food that are generically considered "unhealthy". When trying to eat "clean" people tend restrict themselves. Again, this is not maintainable. All foods are healthy in moderation. This includes your favorite chips or dessert.
